Yoshitoshi (1839 - 1892) studied as a young boy under his master Utagawa Kuniyoshi,
from whom we received the "yoshi" of his artistic name. His prolific output included pictures of beautiful women (bijin-ga),
actor portraits (yakusha-e), and warrior prints (musha-e). His warrior prints were especially bloody and full of gore. Yoshitoshi
is said to have suffered from mental illness during his life, which is thought to have influenced many of his bizarre and
macabre compositions.
